For the first three months 1915, the 1st Hampshire battalion of 11 Brigade, 4th Division were holding the line in Ploegsteert Wood in Belgium alternating between the front line and reserve billets. Because of flooding here, the trenches were shallow, protected by breastworks of sand bags and the battalion spent most of their time trying to improve the defences as well as having to contend with shell and sniper fire. During February the battalion sustained a number of casualties including Thomas Stubbs who died from wounds on 26th February.
